About the Bowen Technique

The Bowen technique is a soft tissue remedial therapy, named after its innovator Tom Bowen from Geelong in Australia. He developed his own ‘technique’ and had a thriving practice until he died in the 1980’s. His technique is now known throughout the world, and many talented and experienced professional practitioners including physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, and sports therapists now use the technique in preference to or alongside their own modalities.

The technique involves a series of gentle rolling moves across muscle, ligament, tendon and other soft tissue. The therapist uses his or her thumbs or fingers on specific areas of the body, applying gentle pressure to effect a movement of the tissue. The process sends impulses to the brain which triggers the body’s own healing and rebalancing mechanism.

A key feature of the work is that the therapist leaves the room for a minimum of two minutes between sets of moves and allows the client to rest. This is a defining aspect of the technique, as well as being one of the most important as the break allows the body an opportunity to create a decision about what action needs to be taken in response to the moves given.

The work is very subtle, relaxing and gentle. There is no deep or prolonged pressure, no manipulation of hard tissue and no force is used or needed. It differs from chiropractic and osteopathy and it is not form of massage.

Bowen technique aims to rebalance the whole body and not just the presenting symptoms. There is evidence that each function of our bodies is connected, so pain in one area of the body may be the result of a problem elsewhere, and treating one specific area may only shift the problem somewhere else. Hence we do not diagnose and we do not treat specific conditions. We treat the body as a whole.

Because of its ‘holistic’ approach, Bowen Technique is not only effective for muscular and skeletal problems but also for digestive, reproductive, and nervous system issues.
