I was introduced to Bowen through a recommendation lower back pain, which had come about after I took up a part-time job waitressing a few years ago. It got worse and reached the point whereby at the end of long shifts the aching was that bad I couldn’t do anything but lie down for the rest of the day.
I went to a health centre and asked for their advice. Although I had never heard of it, they suggested I try Bowen, commenting on an apparent tilt in my pelvis.
I came out of my first treatment with strong ‘tingling’ / aching sensations throughout my whole body, not just in my back, but throughout my whole body. Something was happening but I didn’t know what it was. I was utterly amazed because the therapist had done what seemed like such little work.
I was intrigued by the technique and wanted to know more. After two treatments at weekly intervals, my back pain had completely eased and I felt wonderful. I have not since experienced that level of pain and discomfort, even after hard physical activity or long periods of standing or sitting. I now enjoy Bowen for ‘maintenance’ every 6 to 8 weeks.
I have always had an interest in health, and particularly physiology and behaviour. I studied for my degree in Behavioural Science at Nottingham University, and later went on to do a Masters in Health Psychology at City University in London. After this I took up a research psychologist post at UCL in London. Since deciding the academic route was not for me, I began temping to take time out to reconsider my career.
As soon as I’d experienced Bowen, I knew that this is what I wanted to do, for something that is often unheard of, it is such a powerful therapy, yet so subtle at the same time. I wanted others to experience and benefit from it. I qualified as a certified Bowen practitioner through the European College of Bowen Studies in 2008.
I practice from my home clinic set in the idyllic tranquil surroundings of Greys Mallory, which is conveniently situated between Warwick and Leamington, close to junctions 13 and 14 of the M40. I also run clinics at Amitayus Wellbeing in Atherstone on Wednesdays, and The Bridge Therapy Centre in Earlsdon, Coventry.
